Madagascar – ISIKA Nosy Be

ISIKA Nosy Be is a territorial initiative currently under structuring on the island of Nosy Be, Madagascar. It was created in response to the growing environmental and public health impacts caused by inadequate management of municipal solid waste, starting with plastic waste, which today represents one of the most urgent and visible challenges in the local context.

The project aims to progressively develop an integrated waste management system adapted to a fragile island and tourism-dependent context, combining collection, sorting and recycling, controlled management of non-recoverable waste, environmental education and local institutional strengthening.

ISIKA Nosy Be operates in close coordination with the Municipality of Nosy Be and is currently awaiting formal recognition as an NGO in Madagascar, as well as the necessary authorisations related to land use, waste management activities and the development of the planned infrastructure. In parallel, ISIKA Italia APS/ETS, currently under establishment, will support the project in terms of technical partnerships, international relations and fundraising, while keeping operational responsibilities and governance firmly anchored in the Malagasy context.

The initiative is designed with a medium- to long-term perspective and is conceived as a pilot project that may be replicable in other island contexts in the Indian Ocean.
